Sport

Sport Guidelines

We play sport for healthy recreation and enjoyment. Children have to be active every day. Physical activity stimulates growth and leads to improved physical and emotional health. Research has shown that the importance of physical activity in children is stronger than ever. For Eversdal, sport is much more than just exercise because it also contributes to a child’s development, both psychologically and socially. The sport field also creates an all-important learning environment for our learners where they can learn to cope, adapt and function in a team environment. These are all important skills which our learners will need to acquire and apply in adult life.

Eversdal Primary School is committed to providing the best sporting environment and facilities possible, so that every learner in the School is able to play the sport of his/her choice, guided by quality coaching and instruction. This commitment endeavours to provide for the full spectrum of Eversdal Primary School’s learners; for the ambitious talented sports boys and girls, to be prepared for sport at the highest level, as well as those who wish to enjoy their sport on a more social level. Furthermore, the sport coaches are committed to create an environment in which each learner is encouraged to participate in the correct manner and spirit.

  • The main objective of sport is enjoyment. Learners must have fun while participating.
  • Sport needs to be instrumental in teaching learners how to deal with life.
  • Coaches need to make time and create opportunities for experimenting, to celebrate success, to make mistakes, to carry the consequences and to learn from them.
  • Learners are children and they do not have the experience and expertise of adults.
  • Sport is about the development of learners, coaches, educators, parents and spectators.
  • Losing a match is just as important for personal development as winning. To lose requires emotional control and constructive thinking.
  • To establish a healthy balance between achievement and participation.
  • To promote mass participation in a variety of school sports.
  • To help develop a true love for, and enjoyment of, the sport.
  • To develop good sportsmanship, camaraderie and perseverance.
  • To develop sport skills.
  • To offer quality coaching through the most appropriate coaching techniques, coaching courses and clinics.
  • To realise and develop our children’s talents.
  • To promote the image of our school by focusing on key values such as: Integrity Respect Discipline Religious beliefs

The Governing Body determines the School’s official sporting disciplines. The nine sporting disciplines below are organised by the School, receive funding from the Annual School Budget and are also recognised as part of the school’s Recognition Policy.

  • Athletics
  • Chess
  • Cricket
  • Cross Country
  • Hockey (Boys & Girls)
  • Netball

Athletics

Athletics play a crucial role in the holistic development of young children, offering a foundation for physical fitness and personal discipline. At Eversdal we encourage our learners to take part in various athletic events as this not only promotes healthy growth and development but also fosters the importance of perseverance and goal setting. We motivate our learners to give their very best whilst still practicing good sportsmanship. We feel that early exposure to athletics can inspire a lifelong passion for physical activity and well-being.

Athletics general information

  • Athletics is an individual sport, within a team sport; therefore, all athletes are selected according to their individual achievements.
  • Athletics consists of field items and track items.
  • Juniors (Gr 1 – 3) only take part in sprints (60m, 80m, 100m).
  • The extra-mural programme has a training slot for both team athletes and non- team athletes. Team athletes include the top 4 athletes per item and non-team includes all the other athletes that wishes to train.
  • Practices are attended in Evergym attire.
  • Team athletes must attend practices as much as possible.
  • Please consult the extra-mural programme, for practice times.

Team selection

  • Athletes selected for participation in events are mainly composed of the results of the Top 6 Athletics Meeting of Term 1 and the Interhouse Athletics Meeting of Term 4.
  • The first four places are considered for the inclusion of the athletics team, where the top two will mostly take part in events and number three and four will be seen as reserves.

Athletics Meetings

  • Athletics meetings take place on different days.
  • Information regarding an athletics event and team lists will be sent by the sport office via the App during the week.  Please respond promptly to inform the office of the availability of the athlete.
  • Every meeting is unique, and has different rules, events, and programmes. This means that the number of athletes partaking in each event might vary.
  • Meeting attire: Refer to Eversdal Clothing Policy

Swimming

Swimming at Eversdal Primary School is an integral part of the school’s sporting curriculum, offering learners a comprehensive aquatic programme aimed at developing their swimming skills, water safety knowledge, and overall fitness.

Swimming as a sport, aids in developing children’s fine motor skills and co-ordination, which is directly related to the development of a higher level of intelligence.

We focus on developing all swimming styles, but learning the proper swim technique is a long, and often a repetitive process as the swimmers learn how to identify their movement patterns and feel more comfortable in the water.

The school has a well-maintained swimming pool and dedicated coaching staff who are committed to providing high-quality instruction to learners of all abilities.

  • The Junior A and Senior A teams are selected after the swimming trials.

Tennis

At Eversdal Primary School, we offer tennis opportunities for all ages, allowing students to experience and enjoy the sport.  Tennis helps young children develop hand-eye co-ordination, as they learn to track and hit the ball with accuracy. It also improves agility and footwork, as players move quickly around the court to respond to different shots.

Tennis general information

  • Tennis is a summer sport and takes place during the 1st and 4th terms.
  • All players are to attend practice sessions in their Evergym attire.
  • If a team player participates in two summer sports, he/she must attend as many practices as possible.
  • Please consult the extra-mural programme, for practice times.

Team selection

  • Teams are determined at the end of the year, based on the rankings, after the tennis trials.
  • Players participating in these trials must be able to keep their own score and serve.
  • This ranking is used in the first term, of the following year.
  • During the third term, there will be a knockout tournament that will determine the rankings for the 4th term.

Procedure – Challenge for ranking/position

After the third league matches, in the first term, a player can challenge another player who is one position above him/her.  If he/she wins, he/she moves into this player’s position and the other player moves down one position.  When a player wants to challenge, he/she must first notify the head of tennis.  A tennis coach will supervise these challenges.

  • A player playing in a higher ranking must play a league match in that position before the player may challenge a player in a higher ranking.
  • No challenge is allowed after the last league matches in the first term.
  • The challenger replaces the person he/she has challenged on the ranking list if he/she is not available twice.
  • The challenge match is decided out of the best of 6 games for u/13 A and B teams (6/0 or 6/3 or 6/5 tiebreak, etc.) and best of 4 games (4/2 or 4/3) for everyone else.
  • After the second league matches, in the fourth term, a player can challenge another player who is one position above him/her. If he/she wins, he/she moves into this player’s position and the other player moves down one position.  When a player wants to challenge, he/she must first notify the head of tennis.  A tennis coach will supervise these challenges.
  • Players who are not on the ranking list and would like to challenge can be placed at the bottom of the ranking list and start challenging players.
  • Matches outside school tennis (for example WP trials, Tennis clubs, Wilson tournament or any other tournament will NOT count for the ranking list).

Match information

  • Match Day Attire: Refer to Eversdal Clothing Policy
  • u/11 and u/13 Tennis leagues are played during the week. It involves singles as well as doubles matches.
  • These matches take place at various venues and players must make use of their own transport.
  • Eversdal also takes part in various tournaments, which are mostly on weekends.

Sickness and injury

  • If a player is injured or ill and is not available for the relevant league match, the players will move up according to the rankings, if the coach was notified in advance.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking was officially introduced as part of Eversdal Primary School’s sports programme in January 2025. We aim to encourage learners to stay active, build confidence, and develop valuable life skills through sport.

Mountain biking is a unique activity that allows learners to participate individually while being part of a supportive team. It is also a wonderful sport that families can enjoy together.
